Don’t let anyone convince you that motion detectors alone are a substitute for them. Glass breakage sensors are available too, but are optional. Most burglars only break glass in order to unlock a door or window. Then, when they open the door or window, a standard transmitter will detect the entry. Next, decide what kind of control panel you want. There are two types: A “cabinet style” panel consists of a keyboard that mounts near the door and a circuit board that mounts near your phone interface. A “self contained” panel is a single unit that mounts near the door. This one part panel is easier to install but has one weakness. An intruder entering through the door can tear it off the wall before the panel finishes notifying the monitoring service. With a two part panel, the circuit board keeps working even if the keypad is disconnected. With either type of panel, you’ll need a special phone jack called an “RJ31X” to connect the panel to your phone lines.

We appraised the installation process, the ease and clarity of registering and syncing, the app experience, and functionality. We were pleased to find we could get most systems up in less than half an hour, but the quality of both hardware and software differed. We docked points for flimsy or easy to knock over physical elements and slow or dysfunctional cyber ones. Effective home security offers crisp and quick app interfaces preferably with practical perks like customized sensor names and facial recognition and instantaneous notifications. Rather than restrict control to a physical hub hung on your wall, Abode puts control where you actually need it: in the palm of your hand. Abode’s security dashboard is accessible by any internet connected device and gives you enough information to take action from wherever you are. When Abode’s motion sensors are triggered, it snaps a photo to show you what triggered it. The smart key fob and its three buttons — away, standby/disarm, and home — allow you to disarm as you walk towards the front door. We found that a lot more convenient than racing inside to beat the alarm’s 30 second window, particularly if you have an armful of groceries or a baby on your hip. The SimpliSafe system requires a professional monitoring subscription to receive alerts. That’s because it relies on a cellular connection rather than internet, so someone needs to send you an SMS text.

The doors are a burglar’s most common means of entry. Know that a steel or solid core door, not a hollow core door, is more resistant to forced entry. Replace a push button knob lock with a deadbolt lock to add more resistance. Many homes have double hung windows which can be “pinned” by installing a pin in the lower window sash. Keep your garage door closed when the garage is unattended. An open garage door is an open invitation for any thief. Illuminate the exterior entrances to your home. No burglar wants to be visible as they walk around a home. Make sure to trim bushes down to reduce hiding places. All bushes should be trimmed so they do not cover windows and doors; preferably less than 3 feet tall. Trees should be trimmed up so burglars may not hide behind them.
